Hair thinning and hair loss in men is primarily dependent on genetics. Men with hair thinning have a genetic predisposition to elevated levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the androgen that causes hair loss. DHT causes the miniaturization of hairs until finally the follicle is unable to produce hair. The gene may be inherited from the father or mother’s side of the family, or both. In the United States, male pattern baldness affects about 40 million men, 25 percent of men begin thinning or balding by the age of 30, and over 60% begin thinning or balding by age 60. Most men experience some kind of recession at the hairline forming a classic “widower’s peak” where the frontal hair is lower than the sides which are receding. Hair thinning patterns are depicted by the Norwood Scale, which shows the degrees of hair loss experienced by men.

Hair Replacement Systems
Hair replacement systems may be suitable for men who are not candidates for hair transplant surgery. Hair in hair systems are made from human hair or synthetic hairs that closely resemble real hair. More expensive hair systems are ultra-lightweight and breathable. Typically, clients have a system custom made to the shape of their head. The base of the system is a mesh weave into which hairs are inserted in a way that resembles real hair. Hair systems are attached to the scalp with clips or adhesive. Hair systems are somewhat delicate and need to be maintained. Every few months a hair system wearer will have to have his system maintained and reattached to his head.

Wigs
Unlike hair systems, wigs are “off the shelve” in most cases, although custom wigs can be made. Wigs tend to look less natural than hair systems but are also much less expensive and more easily maintained. They tend to be less comfortable to wear.

Hair Loss Medications
Hair loss medications such as Propecia or Minoxidil can slow or stop hair loss, though you are commited to a life long course of medications because your hair loss will resume as soon as you stop taking the drug. Patients having hair transplant surgery generally take hair loss drugs to ensure that their native hair stops falling out. Although the transplanted hair is not succeptible to hair loss, patients with an established pattern of hair loss still have to safeguard the native hair that may still be affected by hair thinning or loss.

Hair Transplant Surgery
Hair transplant surgery is the only permanent solution to hair thinning or hair loss. In hair transplant surgery, grafts (2-4 hair groups that occur naturally) are removed from the donor area at the back of the head. A hair transplant doctor then makes tiny incisions known as recipient sites into which the hair grafts are transplanted. Hair transplant patients will see the final result of their hair restoration surgery by about 1 year after surgery.

Propecia
Propecia (Finasteride) is a drug approved for hair thinning and hair loss in men. Propecia reduces the body’s production of dehydrotestosterone or DHT, an androgen that is elevated in men with hair thinning and hair loss and that is thought to be the cause of hair loss. Propecia was developed to treat the scalp vertex (crown) and anterior mid-scalp (the middle and front of head). Propecia is NOT approved for use in women with hair loss because the active ingredient may cause abnormalities of a male baby’s sex organs. Propecia is available by prescription only.

If Propecia is stopped, your hair loss will return to its normal rate of loss.

Read more about Propecia.

Minoxidil
Minoxidil (sold as Rogaine or Regaine), is a hair loss medication in ointment form applied to the scalp daily that slows or stops hair loss and hair thinning and promotes hair growth. One study of men aged 18–50 years with hair loss (male pattern baldness) found that those who applied a 5% solution of Minoxidil for 32 weeks increased their non-vellus hair counts by an average of 39 hairs/cm2, in contrast to 5 hairs/cm2 in subjects who received a placebo.

If Minoxidil is stopped, your hair loss will return to its normal rate of loss.

Though many herbs, vitamins, and “natural cures” are said to stop hair loss, no evidence exists which supports the claims made by people that sell them. Natural baldness treatments have been tried by men and women throughout history with little or no success. If there was a natural cure for hair loss, it would be a discovery that would be studied, verified and trumpeted from the rooftops. The main sellers would not be Internet based companies praying on the self-image issues of vulnerable consumers.
